Painted Rocks National Lakeshore

A few years ago, we went on a long road trip. From west Texas, we drove all the way up into northern Michigan pulling our travel trailer, with all seven children in tow. I will have to write about the trip at a later time, but there is a place we visited that you should place on your "bucket list." (Actually there were several places from that trip that should go on that list.) It is called Painted Rocks National Lakeshore.

It is one of those places that must be viewed from the water, so we boarded a boat "for a three hour tour."  I honestly don't remember if it lasted three hours, but having lived so long with my husband, who frequently breaks out in snatches of any of a thousand different songs at the drop of a hat, I couldn't help myself .

The waters of Lake Superior are crystal clear and very cold. It is said that Lake Superior never gives up its dead. That is true because the gases that normally form in a body that cause it to float after drowning never form because of the temperature. Morbid, but fascinating facts thrown in at no extra charge.

If you were to take all the water from Lake Superior and put it in a swimming pool that was five feet deep, guess how big that pool would have to be?

That pool? It would have to be the size of the United States!!! That's a lot of water!

The natives were becoming restless. And possibly hungry!!

It truly is amazing that they allow us to board any means of public transportation.

  1. Gorgeous pictures! The Painted Rocks are on our list for next summer, although living on on the 45th parallel, we won't be driving nearly as far as you did.
