C. S. Lewis on Love

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.…The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.”

C. S. Lewis is one of my favorites. And when I saw this quote on another blog, it reminded me of the stories of so many of you that you have shared with me about Love. Even though it demands such a high price, we pay. Gladly. Because if we don't Love, we can't look like Him. We can't touch those around us. We can't really live.

So here's to all our broken hearts, sacrificed willingly because we are mothers and sisters and daughters and wives (oh yes, and brothers and fathers and sons and husbands : ). And, through our brokenness, may He enlarge our hearts so that we can love more and better in His Name and for His Glory.

Happy Heart Day!!
