Visiting the Cousins

Elizabeth on Morgan

You would think we have "ants in our pants," considering how much we travel. But I guess that is to be expected when you "live in an antbed." There are seasons where, even for our well seasoned Road Warriors, we get tired. So yesterday, we took a "mental health" day from homeschooling so that I could regather all of my lost marbles. We got back into town Wednesday afternoon from a quick trip to Fort Worth. Kregg had some classes he needed to attend and so he offered the four youngest and me the opportunity to tag along and visit my sister and her family. Didn't have to ask twice for that one!

We left Sunday morning after worship. In fact we left from there, to save time. Of course, this is after having to get everyone up, make sure they are clean, dressed, and packed. Then we had to load all the gear. For this trip, the gear included not only clothing and pillows and cameras and kindles and books but also two compound bows and the sack of stuff the cousins had left at our house during their previous visit.  Before we could head to church, Kregg ran down to our neighbor's house to pick up a dishwasher and microwave he was wanting to donate. There are many families at our little church who would be blessed to receive either one of these things. Anyway, all that to say that just getting out the door Sunday morning was quite an adventure.

After service, we were scheduled to have our pictures made for a new church directory. Always fun. These may actually not look like mug shots. Hope springs eternal. We loaded up, six of us for this trip, in the pickup for the 300 mile journey "back East." Now we really do love each other and enjoy immensely being together. But eating all crammed on top of each other in a moving pickup is definitely a challenge. We got burgers "to-go" and decided to eat them on the way. You would be quite amused to watch those proceedings. I had the "drink holder" with four of the drinks balanced between one knee and the arm rest on the door, trying desperately not to dump it all on my lap or in the floor. One of the sacks filled with food was perched on the other knee. (Remember, I am a trained professional. Do not attempt on your own.)

We took a little detour on this trip because Kregg had found a motorcycle he wanted to look at, so we added about an hour to our drive and ended up not being able to get hold of the man who had it for sale. Oh well, it was a pretty drive. Upon arrival at my sister's that night, the fun began!

Our kids love to visit their cousins because our home is dull compared to theirs. At least, that's what the kids think. At "the cousins", they get to ride horses, gather chicken eggs, fish for crawdads, help build bee boxes, hunt toads, hack down small trees with axes and machetes, and explore in the woods.
Mr. Crawdad, ready to do battle!

A very large Texas Rat Snake. This is when he and Rebekah were still friends.

On this particular trip there just happened to be another snake in the hen house. Rebekah wanted to bring it home. Thankfully, they parted ways after he bit her. She was indignant "after all she had done for him." Nothing worse than an ungrateful snake!

The kids were going to spend the first night in the tree house, but a storm blew through complete with lightening, thunder, and hail, so they migrated into the living room. It was wall-to-wall sleeping bags on top of the wall-to-wall carpeting.
The zip line is lots of fun!

Being there only two full days required getting the most out of every minute. So the adventures commenced at daybreak and went past sundown. When they do go to sleep, they sleep soundly. Sometimes they just don't last until bedtime.

With 10 children, ages 13 and under, there's always someone to have fun with. We enjoyed two glorious days of adventure with only a few injuries and misadventures.

Now we're back to our "dull" home. The kids are handling their grief admirably.
