Teach Us To Number Our Days Aright

"What in this moment should be getting your attention?" That was the question that stood out this morning in the sermon on James 4. Our pastor was talking about not taking a single moment for granted, but savoring each one as a gift from God.

Hmmmm . . .

Where have I heard that before? Sounds a lot like Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts, doesn't it? It also dovetails perfectly with one of the two principles the Lord has me focusing on this year: to learn about "Being instead of just Doing."

To use every moment, every resource entrusted to us to bring Him Glory will be to answer the question, "What in this moment should be getting my attention?" What does He want me focused on at this moment in time? Did He just bring someone to mind so that I can pray? Is He revealing Himself to me in that amazing moon tonight? As my child requires discipline in this moment, how do I point them to Him? I have this "free" moment right now, is it so that I can simply "be still and know He is God?" As I feel impatience rising up in my spirit at this moment, will I stand in His strength or try to deal with it in my own strength? What is it in this moment that He wants me to see?

So, on this wonderful new gift of a Monday, the first day of Spring, I need to practice "Being". I need to see what He is highlighting in each moment. I need to give Him my full attention. Each moment, I can choose. And as He grows me in this area, I can learn to "Be all there", not missing anything He has for me. Seeing Him with every breath. Dwelling in Him as He dwells in me.

Lord, please lengthen my oh-so-very-short-attention-span. Help me learn to be still in my spirit so that I may notice the details. So that I may hear the Whispers. So that I may learn to breathe it all in. Help me receive the gift of the moment. Thank You for Your patience with these baby steps.
Through Jesus,
Amen
