Oh yes, we all know how Martha was distracted by the house work and the needs of her guests. Okay, that's a valid issue. But that is not the "sum total of dear Martha." I was reading this passage the other day and it struck me that I had defined her as the one who, with Jesus in her house, was thinking about the cooking and the cleaning. But there's much more to her than that.
John 11:20-27
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
WooooHoooo! Those are bold statements coming from a woman I had written off as shallow.
I am so glad that John gives us this extra information so that we can see a clearer picture of the Martha Jesus loved. How many times have I read these verses without them making a dent?
If someone took a tiny little piece of my life to use in defining me as a person, there are PLENTY of pieces that would give them a very negative view of who I am. What a blessing that He sees us completely and clothes our wretchedness in His Glory and Righteousness!!
So, yes, I am still a huge fan of Mary and her heart to sit at His feet. But, I am also a huge fan of Martha and her bold faith!
Lord,
Please help me see your beloved ones through Your eyes, not mine. I want to look at others from Your perspective of Truth, not through the little pieces of the puzzle I can see from here. Thank You for Your Mercy and Patience toward me. Teach me to extend Mercy and Patience to others so that You will be glorified.
