A Scary Moment

We had an exciting morning yesterday! After driving into Smoky Mountain National Park on the Cade's Cove Loop, we got out to look at an old cabin. Rebekah and I were walking up one path that went through the woods, most of the rest of our family went up another path beside a large meadow. There was a couple ahead of us and we could tell when they spotted something off to the side of the path. When we caught up to them, we saw what they were looking at: a mama black bear with three cubs! I kept asking if we needed to leave, but the bear wasn't bothered at all by our presence.

Soon a crowd gathered on the path with us, including Kregg and the other kids and his mom. He took my camera and started taking some more pictures. I grabbed my phone and started shooting a little video. The mama was just piddling around climbing on logs looking for food. The cubs were playing close by. Then she began digging at the base of a stump. We were all just standing there watching. We were too close. And my brain kept telling me that, but no one else seemed concerned, even the bears. Kregg was looking down at the camera, saying something to one of the kids. He had taken his eye off the mama while moving a couple of steps closer. He didn't notice that she had stopped what she was doing and was watching him. Here's what happened . . .
