It is informative and interesting to observe the natural tendencies of each of our children in regard to their personal work ethic. We have tried to encourage and instruct in this area and the results have been mixed. Some children are just more naturally willing to learn to work hard than others. Those who resist are challenging.
Case in Point: Our two youngest sons versus our youngest daughter
The boys are both good workers, willing to help with anything we need, often taking the initiative to do what they see needs to be done. They are requiring less supervision to remain on task and are more self motivated than they used to be. We try to work alongside our children as they learn new jobs, teaching them instead of simply telling them. It takes longer for a task to be accomplished doing it this way, but the fruit is much better.
Their hard work has been noticed by our neighbors. They have seen Josh and Ben working on projects in the yard and have begun calling to schedule them to come work on their projects. They are up to about 5 regular "customers" who call to have them do everything from trimming trees to mowing, edging, painting, raking, or hauling things around. Their savings accounts reflect these opportunities and they enjoy having "pocket money" for things like hammocks and swimming goggles.
We are thankful they can bless others this way and know they are learning a great deal that is beneficial.
That is all great. But not all of our children have chosen to learn this lesson. Our youngest, bless her little heart, is not self motivated to work. The consequences we impose because of her lack of effort haven't really made a dent. Simply taking care of her regular responsibilities as a member of our family often requires "external motivation." Recently, however, she has become very interested in receiving an income similar to that of the boys. She has asked for us to come up with ways for her to earn money. Last night, after she found out how much the boys are receiving in "payment of services rendered" this week, she left a note for Kregg requesting again some way to earn a substantial sum.
So this morning we had a little talk. I explained to her that the boys are receiving a blessing from the Lord because of their faithful service. The Lord has provided them with these opportunities to earn money because they have chosen to learn to be good workers. Further, I explained that I believe the Lord will not bless her with similar opportunities to earn money until she learns to be faithful over the responsibilities she has already been given, the ones that offer no financial rewards.
There have been so many of these windows for instruction that I have completely messed up in the past by scolding instead of instructing, and I'm sure I will mess up more of them going forward. But, this morning the Spirit showed me exactly the words to speak into this little heart and, as always when I follow where He leads, it was perfect! And she received it well. She understood that she was hearing the Truth spoken in Love. Why do I ever do it any other way? :)
I'm sure the "discussion" isn't over in this area, but He sowed seeds this morning that I know will bring forth the desired fruit in her spirit. We will just need to continue "watering" per His Instructions.
To be continued . . .
