The Dawn Treader
(This is the official trailer for the movie from YouTube)
We are enormous fans of C. S. Lewis! I have no idea how many of his books we own. The kids loved every page of the Chronicles of Narnia. I am presently working on The Abolition of Man. Caleb is in the middle of Screwtape. Our three older children have all read Lewis extensively and I look forward to the day the younger four can read his Space Trilogy. Oh my!!!
Anyway, we have seen the first two installments of the Narnia movies and enjoyed them, but they definitely did not live up to the books. So, I found this review from David Kern at The Circe Institute to be very interesting. Thought it might be helpful for anyone planning to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I think we have watched the previous two movies through the lens of the books, and so have overlooked some of the issues mentioned by Andrew Kern. My plan, at this point, is to see the movie, but only after we have discussed this review. Even a ten year old can practice discernment. Especially since we are learning all about detecting fallacies.
What do you think? Have you read the books? Seen the first two movies? Are you planning to see the new one?

I did watch the first 2 like them but did not LOVE then and taught they were not accurate to the books, will probably watch this one, maybe?
ReplyDeleteHave you read "the great divorce" by C.S. Lewis It was interesting!
Mrs. Stam,
ReplyDeleteI have The Great Divorce, but haven't read it yet. My oldest daughter loved that one. It's in my "stack". Hopefully, sooner rather than later.
Gee, I know Caspian sucked, but that review talks about it sucking on way more levels than I even realized. I thought they did a good job on Wardrobe, but that was also the one that Gresham was involved in. I don't know if he's been involved in the other two.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to see Dawn Treader, mostly because it was my favorite book, and in watching the trailers, I think I've identified every one of the islands. (And also the BBC version's special effects always left me so disappointed, I want to see it done with actual CGI.)
They tried too hard to make Caspian into a teen-appeal movie, I think. Also, you know the second half of the book, where Aslan is running around with Bacchus and turning people into animals and trees and stuff? That would be HORRIFYING on a screen. I was actually glad they changed it for the movie.
I haven't seen any of the movies, but "the great divorce" is in my book stack. I read the first 2 Narnia books with my 10 year old this summer, but we didn't get much more involved.
